FOUNDATION COURSE IN ASTROLOGY
Our Foundation Course is ideal for those at the beginning of their astrological journey. Covering Modules 1 to 3, this course provides you with a solid understanding of astrological principles, including chart interpretation, planetary movements, and the relationship between celestial events and human experiences. You will develop the skills to read and analyse birth charts with confidence.

No prior knowledge is required, and by the end of the course, you’ll be able to understand the basic structure of an astrological chart, interpret key astrological symbols, and explore the meaning of planetary aspects.

DIPLOMA COURSE IN ASTROLOGY
For those looking to advance their studies, our Diploma Course is a comprehensive and rigorous programme that’s highly respected in the astrological community. This course covers Modules 4 to 9 and is designed for students who have completed the Foundation Course or have equivalent experience.

The Diploma Course delves deeper into complex chart analysis, predictive techniques, synastry (relationship astrology), and other specialised subjects. Graduates of the Diploma Course go on to become professional astrologers, or simply enhance their personal practice with an in-depth and nuanced understanding of astrology. The Diploma is a mark of distinction, recognised worldwide, and opens doors to professional opportunities in astrology.

From beginner to advanced in 9 modules

Throughout your journey with the Faculty of Astrological Studies, you will explore a rich and comprehensive curriculum designed to deepen your understanding of astrology. From foundational techniques such as chart interpretation and forecasting to advanced topics such as astrocartography, the astrology of family dynamics, and working with clients, each module builds on the last, allowing you to develop both technical skills and intuitive insight.

Key topics covered:

  • The Solar system and celestial sphere
  • Planets: archetypes, meanings, and myths
    • Personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars)
    • Social planets (Jupiter and Saturn)
    • Outer planets (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto)
    • Chiron and its astrological significance
  • The signs of the zodiac and their grouping by polarities, elements, and modes
  • The twelve houses and the meaning of planets in houses
  • Practical exercises to build your astrological vocabulary and interpret planetary placements

By the end of Module 1, you’ll have a strong understanding of how the planets, signs, and houses work together, preparing you for deeper study as you progress through the course.

Key topics covered:

Time, space, and the four angles of the horoscope:
Learn how to calculate and interpret the four angles of a horoscope, which are essential to understanding an astrological chart. You’ll explore how time and space are measured and how these concepts are used to position the planets in a chart.

Aspects and aspect patterns:
This section introduces the concept of aspects – the angular relationships between planets – and how they influence the dynamics of a chart. You’ll learn about different types of aspects, their meanings, and how to interpret them in practice. Aspect patterns, which show the interaction between multiple planets, are also introduced.

The Sun-Moon relationship:
The module covers the lunation cycle, the phases of the Moon, and the significance of the Moon’s Nodes. You’ll explore how the Sun and Moon’s relationship reflects an individual’s inner emotional landscape and life cycles.

Astrology in context:
The module concludes with a broader view of astrology’s historical and philosophical context, offering a glimpse into the long tradition and evolution of astrological thought and practice.

Learning methods: The course material includes in-depth articles, videos, self-study quizzes, and interactive exercises. These exercises are designed to be sent to your tutor for feedback. As with Module 1, you’ll have opportunities for self-reflection and journaling to explore how these concepts apply to your personal chart.

By completing Module 2, you will have built a solid foundation for calculating and interpreting key chart elements, positioning you to move forward with more advanced astrological techniques.

This module introduces more advanced chart work, including calculating planetary positions, retrograde motion, and developing skills in whole chart interpretation. It encourages students to synthesize the various factors of a horoscope and integrate them into a meaningful interpretation.

In this module, you will:

  • Explore chart imbalances – learn about planetary chart shapings and imbalances.
  • Study planetary dignities and debilities.
  • Understand retrograde motion – Discover how retrograde planets influence a birth chart.
  • Calculate the positions of the planets
  • Master calculating planetary positions using an ephemeris.
  • Draw up a natal chart by hand
  • Learn step-by-step techniques for hand-drawing a horoscope using the Faculty’s Chart Form.
  • Develop whole chart interpretation skills
  • Synthesize the different components of a chart (e.g., Sun, Moon, planets, angles, and nodes).
  • Practice systematic chart analysis using case studies.
  • Reflect on astrology’s role in the modern world

By the end of this module, you will have developed the skills necessary to calculate and interpret a complete horoscope, expanding your understanding of the connections between planetary motion and astrological interpretation.

Module 4: Time I – Transits and Solar Returns
An overview of planetary cycles and the fundamentals of forecasting through transits and solar returns, as well as a look at astrology’s place within broader thought systems.

This module introduces two forecasting techniques based on the idea of movement according to symbolic time – secondary progressions and solar arc directions. Chart examples are used to illustrate the differences between progressions and directions, and between symbolic timing techniques and the ‘real time’ techniques of transits and solar returns.

Module 6: Intermediate Interpretation

Stargazer, British Library Harley 334 f.95v

This is a practical module designed to build skills and confidence through practising the interpretation skills learned so far and then combining them with all the forecasting techniques to produce an integrated picture of the natal chart set within a particular forecasting period. In preparation for Diploma level II, consultancy skills will be introduced, within the context of a short ‘live’ chart reading, so that you can begin to take your astrology to the next level, deepening your interpretation and developing the skills of conducting a dialogue and creating rapport with a client.

We offer a choice of two pathways for Module 7. You only need take one of these optional pathways to gain the full 20 credits for Module 7. However, if you wish to study all of the material, you can enrol to take both pathways together via Distance Learning and for an additional fee. Distance Learning via Email students have 9 months tuition time if enrolled on both pathways.

Module 7[R]: The Astrology of Relationship

In this optional Module 7 pathway, we embark upon a profound journey into the astrology of interpersonal relationships.

In the first part of the module, we will study the core techniques of relationship astrology – such as natal chart comparison, synastry contacts, and the composite chart. We consider both romantic and non-romantic relationships, with reference to case studies.

In the second part of the module, we explore the fascinating area of the astrology of the family. Astrology can help shed light upon the complexities and dynamics of family life, including the relationship to parents and siblings, myths and themes in the family background, and the role and experience of the individual within the family unit. This study offers a new context for the natal chart as a unique expression of the ancestral matrix.

This optional pathway may suit you if you want to explore the deeper psychological dimensions of the astrology of relationship, and are seeking personal growth and insight into family dynamics and ancestral patterns.

Module 7[T]: Advanced Techniques

In this optional Module 7 pathway, a number of astrological techniques are studied that pertain to both relationships and the natal chart.

In the first part of the module, we will study the core techniques of relationship astrology – such as natal chart comparison, synastry contacts, and the composite chart. We consider both romantic and non-romantic relationships with reference to case studies.

In the second part of the module, we explore two advanced techniques which open up a whole new dimension of chart interpretation: midpoints and harmonics. The midpoint between two planets is a sensitive point, which resonates at eight points around the chart. When a planet or angle occupies a midpoint, its expression is coloured by the combined energies. Harmonics are concerned with the qualitative nature of number, particularly in relation to the minor aspects of quintile, septile and novile, and their associated harmonic charts.

This optional pathway may suit you if you are keen to add more astrological techniques to your toolkit, and are fascinated by number symbolism. The set text for this pathway is The Combination of Stellar Influences by Reinhold Ebertin.

Module 8: The Astrology of World and Place

This module is concerned with the relationship between the individual and the collective – the wider world in which we live. It starts with astrocartography and relocation, techniques which allow us to see the relationship of the individual to different parts of the world. A new section on local space astrology follows, a technique which allows us to map out our own personal orientation within our physical environment and location through the lens of astrology.

We then study mundane astrology (from the Latin word mundus – the world), the branch of astrology which applies astrology to the arena of worldly events. The political, social and economic landscape is explored through the lens of planetary cycles and we look at the role of the individual within the context of the collective picture.

Module 9: Astro-Consultancy and Advanced Interpretation

This final module involves the development of consultation skills and an understanding of the ethical issues which arise in client work. You will be encouraged to develop a high degree of self-awareness through the study of the synastry between yourself and your clients, and will learn how to integrate the wide range of skills and techniques learnt so far into an advanced chart interpretation. As part of the course you will be required to prepare for and carry out a live chart reading for a real client, fully supported at all stages by your tutor. As a guide, two recordings of live client readings with supporting materials are included in the course material supplied with this module.

“My fascination with astrology began in childhood, but it wasn’t until 2012 that I fully embraced it, enrolling at the Faculty. The journey was one of deep self-discovery, guided by supportive and wise tutors. The Faculty’s approach to astrology, integrating chart themes and profound symbolism, was invaluable. It not only deepened my knowledge but also taught me ethical practices and how to create meaningful consultations.
