I have always been fascinated by lunation cycles, not least because I was born on the day of a total lunar eclipse.
Without entering into the controversies that surround Michael Jackson’s life and legacy, few would deny that he was an extraordinarily gifted performer and one of the most commercially successful artists of all time.
So what might we see in his natal chart that indicates this enormous talent, and which timing factors coincided with his rise to global stardom?
Michael Jackson’s Natal Full Moon
Jackson’s chart is remarkable because he was born on the day of a Full Moon in Pisces. Surprisingly, I have not seen many analyses highlighting this, even though it is arguably one of the defining features of his chart.
A key to interpreting New Moons, Full Moons and eclipses is to look at which planets, points and angles are activated by the luminaries.
At the Full Moon of Jackson’s birth, the Sun formed part of a large stellium straddling Virgo and Leo, including Pluto, Mercury, Venus and Uranus.
Michael Jackson was born on 29 August 1958 at 7:33pm in Gary, Indiana, USA. His birth data is rated A in Astro-Databank.
Since both the Sun and Moon lie across his Ascendant-Descendant axis, Jackson can be seen as a powerful embodiment of this Full Moon pattern. Whatever potential this Full Moon carried, he appeared to personify it.
The Moon in Pisces conjunct the Ascendant suggests a natural receptivity to the world of imagination, music and dance. This is combined with the creativity, precision, craftsmanship and pursuit of perfection associated with the Sun in Virgo.
Pluto in Virgo is also conjunct the Sun, making this normally generational placement more personal and specific in Jackson’s chart. It adds intensity, charisma and transformative power, and can be seen in his reinvention from child prodigy into mature artist. Together with Mercury, Venus and Uranus in Leo, this energy is channelled into electrifying music, performance and dance.
This describes an important natal potential for extraordinary creative and commercial success.
But when and how was that potential triggered?
By another Full Moon.
The Full Moon Around Thriller
Michael Jackson’s album Thriller was released at the end of November 1982 and remains widely recognised as the best-selling album of all time. It appeared within a day of a Full Moon in Gemini.
The inner wheel shows Jackson’s natal chart, while the outer wheel shows the Full Moon as transits, set for Los Angeles, where he was then living.
When analysing a lunation chart as a transit to a natal chart, I look at whether and how the luminaries aspect natal planets, points and angles.
In this case, even using tight orbs of three degrees for the major aspects, the 1982 Full Moon squared Jackson’s Sun and his Ascendant-Descendant axis. In other words, his natal Full Moon was strongly activated.
This is fascinating, given that Thriller was the album that propelled him to a level of fame rarely seen in the entertainment industry.
The Lunation Cycle and Album Sales
In the lunation cycle, the Full Moon represents a peak or culmination, with the rest of the cycle moving into a process of waning. In Jackson’s case, Thriller was the point at which he climbed to the very top. It was his second solo album as an adult, following Off the Wall in 1979.
Although he would go on to release four more studio albums before his death in 2009, sales declined with each subsequent release.
Interestingly, none of those four later albums was released close to a New Moon or Full Moon, with the exception of Dangerous, released on 21 November 1991, on the day of a Full Moon in Taurus at 29°07’.
The Dangerous Full Moon: Image and Transformation
The 1991 Full Moon did not strongly aspect Jackson’s natal Full Moon, but it did form a close applying, out-of-sign square to his Pluto in Virgo, with an orb of 3°01’.
The inner wheel shows Jackson’s natal chart, while the outer wheel shows the Full Moon set for Santa Ynez, the town closest to Neverland Ranch, where he was then living.
By the time of Dangerous, Jackson’s public image and physical appearance had changed dramatically, including the marked lightening of his skin tone. His transformation in appearance over the years became almost as widely discussed as his music.
The symbolism is striking. A Full Moon connected with the release of Dangerous also activated Pluto in Jackson’s natal chart, a planet associated with intensity, transformation and processes of profound change.
Last but Not Least
Michael Jackson was a global phenomenon, so what else was “born” around the time of his birth on 29 August 1958?
The answer is the world’s first instant noodles.
Japan’s Momofuku Ando invented Chicken Ramen after years of experimentation, and it went on sale on 25 August 1958, just four days before Jackson’s birth.
If Michael Jackson revolutionised music and dance, instant noodles revolutionised food culture by making cooking faster and more convenient.
I have been exploring ways to integrate natal astrology with mundane astrology. Looking at what happened across the world around the time of a person’s birth is a fascinating starting point, and the connection between Jackson’s birth and the launch of instant noodles provides an unexpected and memorable example.
