Since the popularisation of Greek and Roman myths by Liz  Greene and others in the 1970s and 1980s, the role of mythology in astrological theory and practice has always been rather controversial, with some astrologers rejecting it completely as an entertaining but largely irrelevant digression, while others have embraced it with passion and incorporated it into their work. Where do you stand in this ongoing debate? 

Does understanding the Greek myths and deities help us understand the astrological planets as used in contemporary psychological astrology, or does studying myth actually lead to confusion? Critics who support the latter view can rightly point out how the myths themselves exist in multiple versions that sometimes contradict one another. 

Are the modern astrological planets accurate reflections of the ancient mythological characters after which they were named?  And if they are not, does it matter?  Is it better to keep the mythological separate from the astrological rather than trying to synthesise them?
