In this third webinar, we continue to look at the role of mythology in shaping the way we understand and interpret the astrological planets. The final part in the series focuses on the mythological Zeus, Cronus and Ouranos, and asks whether their traits are fully embodied in the modern astrological planets Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus, to which they theoretically correspond, or whether we need to look elsewhere in order to fully understand these archetypes.

Many of the myths of Zeus portray a deeply flawed character who is larger than life but completely out of control. He does not seem to be particularly wise or generous or concerned with ethical principles, and his motivations are often highly questionable. What if anything does this tell us about the astrological Jupiter and how we should approach our interpretation of the planet today?

In Greek myth, Cronus was originally a god of the harvest, but he is better known as the youngest son of Ouranos who was encouraged by his mother to overthrow his father, and who subsequently ruled over humanity in a glorious Golden Age, a time when there was apparently no need for rules or laws to control people’s behaviour and to maintain order. What does all this tell us about today’s astrological Saturn?

And what of Ouranos himself, many of whose traits do not seem at first sight to be Uranian at all? It is perhaps not surprising that astrologers like Richard Tarnas have suggested that other mythological characters such as Prometheus might embody the revolutionary spirit of Uranus more effectively.
