What are the key skills for an apprentice astrologer? In general terms, it can be said that paying attention to detail, synthesising planet, house and sign, and ensuring interpretations are positive in tone, completely non-judgemental and nicely balanced are the key skills. These three webinars focus on discussing and developing these core skills, with a particular focus on the effective and thorough use of rulership in chart interpretation, and on how to analyse chart factors that in the past were wrongly described either as extremely challenging and problematic or even as serious character flaws. These webinars may be of particular interest to those aiming to take Faculty exams in the future, but it will also be relevant to anyone who just wants to enrich their interpretation skills.

Rulership is a key skill for astrology students and yet it is not always used as fully and accurately as it could be in astrological work. Often the signs, houses and planets involved are not integrated, resulting in rather incomplete or misleading interpretations. The other issue that can arise is that rulership is used in a way that results in rather concrete or fatalistic interpretations that lack psychological depth.
This webinar examines the importance of rulership in natal work and explores how this technique provides invaluable insights into the inner dynamics of the chart. Extensive use will be made of case histories of some interesting historical and contemporary figures. The webinar may be of particular interest to those aiming to take Faculty exams in the future, but it will also be relevant to anyone who just wants to enrich their interpretation skills.

In the past, many chart factors such as a lack of a particular element, a heavy emphasis on one hemisphere at the expense of the other, a planet in the sign of its fall or detriment, a planet that is retrograde, or a planet that is unaspected and so not fully integrated into the rest of the chart, have all been presented as problematic, and even unfortunate.
The modern psychological approach has mercifully taken us away from those unhelpful and negative interpretations and ensured that a more balanced and responsible approach is adopted. But even today, interpreting these factors in a way that is positive and constructive, while at the same time not glossing over the potential downsides, remains challenging, whether in a written interpretation or in a face-to-face consultation. We can portray these factors as ‘blessings in disguise’ – parts of ourselves that may initially make us feel uncomfortable and different from others, but which in fact bring us the unexpected advantages of new insights and perspectives.
The first webinar explores a range of factors including having no (or almost no) planets or points in a particular element, planets in detriment and fall, and retrograde planets.

This second webinar covers unaspected planets, as well as other chart factors that can wrongly be presented as only problematic such as Saturn, Chiron and the Nodal axis. We have updated our booking process this season. After purchasing, you must also register with Zoom. Buying through the shop does not automatically register you.
- Book through our online shop. Choose an individual seminar or the full series. Your order email will contain the Zoom registration link for each seminar you have purchased.
- Follow each link and register with Zoom. Please use the same email address as your order. If you book the full series, complete all three registrations. Registering for one seminar does not register you for the others.
- Check your email for your personal joining links. For upcoming seminars, Zoom will email your joining links after registration, with options to add the sessions to your calendar. You will also receive reminders before each session.
Please register before each upcoming seminar, even if you only plan to watch the recording. This puts you on the list to receive the recording email when it is ready.
Watching the recordings
Your booking includes a recording of each seminar you purchase. All recordings in the Natal Skills series will be available to watch until 4 January 2027.
