Many students and graduates of the Faculty go on to make careers for themselves in astrology, as practitioners, teachers, writers and researchers. Amongst these are many notable examples – astrologers who have become extremely well-known and well-respected in the field. Here is a short selection.
Charles Carter B.A., D.F.Astrol.S
Charles Carter became president of the Astrological Lodge in 1922, and was a colleague of fellow Lodge member Alan Leo. The Lodge blossomed under his guidance. Astrological lectures and training courses were held, and correspondence was built up across the world. In 1948, the Lodge sponsored the founding of the Faculty of Astrological Studies, a body intended to set standards of astrological excellence. He was its first Principal, and became Principal Emeritus on his retirement in 1954. He is the author of many thought-provoking books.
Liz Greene Ph.D, D.F. Astrol. S
A patron of the Faculty, Liz Greene is one of its most renowned Diploma Holders. She is an analytical psychologist and a member of the Association of Jungian Analysts and the International Association for Analytical Psychology, and is co-founder and Director of the Centre for Psychological Astrology. She is also an astrological consultant and has pioneered the integration of Jungian psychology and contemporary astrology. She is the author of numerous books on astrological, mythological and psychological themes including ‘Saturn: A New Look at an Old Devil’; ‘The Astrology of Fate’; ‘The Astrological Neptune’; ‘The Dark of the Soul: Psychopathology in the Horoscope’ and ‘The Astrologer, the Counsellor and the Priest’ (with Juliet Sharman-Burke). She obtained an MA in Cultural Astronomy and Astrology from Bath Spa University in 2007 and a PhD in History from the University of Bristol in 2010.
Mike Harding, D.F.Astrol.S
Mike Harding spent many years as a Faculty Council Member, and was Director of the Faculty’s Counselling Within Astrology course. He is also a past chairman of the Astrological Association of Great Britain and of the Association of Professional Astrologers. He worked together with Charles Harvey for many years, primarily in business and mundane astrology and wrote with Charles the invaluable book ‘Working with Astrology’. Mike is also author of ‘Hymns to the Ancient Gods’ and of numerous articles for various astrological publications. Currently, Mike is working as an existential psychotherapist and is Chair of the Society of Existential Analysis. He is interested in the cross-over points between psychoanalysis, existential practice and the ancient wisdom traditions.
Charles Harvey D.F. Astrol. S
Charles Harvey was a full-time consultant astrologer, teacher, lecturer and writer since gaining his Faculty Diploma in 1966. He was the Faculty’s Vice-President from 1977-1986, the Chairman of the Urania Trust and the Astrological Association’s long-standing President and later Patron. His published works include ‘Mundane Astrology’ (with Michael Baigent and Nick Campion), ‘Working With Astrology’ (with Mike Harding) and ‘Sun Sign Moon Sign’ (with his wife Suzi). He was also a major contributor to ‘Recent Advances in Natal Astrology’, ‘The Larousse Encyclopaedia of Astrology’ and ‘The Future of Astrology’. In later years he was co-director of the Centre for Psychological Astrology with Liz Greene. A man of high profile and standing within the astrological community, he made an enormous contribution to raising the standards of astrology, until his death in 2000.
Clare Martin MA, F.F. Astrol. S
Clare was the Faculty’s President for nine years until 2009, when she was made a Fellow of the school in honour of her many years of work as a tutor and on the Faculty’s Council. She has a Masters Degree in Integrative Psychotherapy and Counselling from City University, London and, in addition to her teaching for the Faculty, was also a tutor, lecturer and supervisor at the Centre for Psychological Astrology. She is the author of Mapping the Psyche, a three volume introduction to psychological astrology. Clare continues to work as a consultant astrologer and teaches for the Faculty at the Summer School in Oxford.
Julia Parker D.F. Astrol. S
Julia studied with the Faculty in the late 1960s and shortly after getting her Diploma accepted the suggestion of her publisher to co-write a book with her husband Derek. ‘The Compleat Astrologer’ became one of the best known books on astrology, was published all over the world and remained in print for 30 years. Julia was Secretary, then President of the Faculty and remains a champion of the Faculty in her current role as Patron. Julia and Derek have since published a large number of popular astrology books accessible to the general public. ‘Parkers’ Astrology’ has become a classic of its day, appealing to the serious student and beginner alike, with a new edition now expanding on the 1991 original.
Melanie Reinhart B.A., D.F. Astrol. S
Melanie is a patron of the Faculty, and a prize-winning Diploma-holder; she received the Charles Harvey Award in 2004, for ‘exceptional service to astrology’. Since 1975, she has been a full-time professional astrologer, offering consultations, teaching and writing. She has taught for some of the world’s leading astrology schools abroad and in the UK, where she also runs her own programme of workshops. Melanie has presented original research on new celestial objects at many international conferences, and maintains a busy consulting practice. Her books have been translated into six languages and include: ‘Chiron and the Healing Journey‘, ‘Saturn, Chiron and the Centaurs’, ‘Incarnation‘, and ‘Saturn: Time, Heritage and Substance’. Melanie has a special interest in meditative experience as a healing modality.
Howard Sasportas D.F. Astrol. S
During his lifetime, Howard established a reputation as one of the world’s leading consultant astrologers. He obtained a Master’s degree in Humanistic Psychology and was awarded the Faculty’s Gold Medal. He taught and lectured extensively and was co-founder with Liz Greene of the Centre for Psychological Astrology. He is the author of a number of books, including ‘The Twelve Houses’ and ‘Dynamics of the Unconscious’, the latter co-written with Liz Greene.
